Type 1 Diabetes NOW

There have been many terms for the Type 1 diabetes as juvenile diabetes, diabetes in children or diabetes in adolescence (so-called diabetes in Youth). As there was the lower incidence of such patients with diabetes compares with that of higher incidence of adult-onset diabetes in Japan, a few of physician and pediatrician who understood the importance of this type of diabetes have been involved in the treatment of such patients over those longer years.

As said in the professor Niimi's writings (1992), there were less than 100 patients with type 1 diabetes in the 1930's. According to the National Survey performed mainly by Drs. Miki and Maruyama in 1970, there were only 619 patients with type 1 diabetes diagnosed under the age of 14.

At the period without any knowledge that children can have diabetes, a summer camp for patients in children/adolescence was first held in Tokyo by Dr. Maruyama in 1963. Afterwards, it was held in Fukuoka, Kumamoto and then held everywhere in a national scale. Nowadays, the patients from childhood to high school students now are joining the summer camp in every summer a summer.

With not only Japan Association for Diabetes Education and Care, but also many companies related to insulin preparations and SMBG devices provided a big support to hold the summer camp for such patients. We are filled with deep emotion to know such advances of the treatment of type 1 diabetes in adolescence.

小児糖尿病の治療の歴史

　小児糖尿病、ヤング糖尿病、1型糖尿病、若年2型糖尿病と、名称こそいろいろありますが、小児期発症の糖尿病患者さんの数が大人の糖尿病患者さんの数にくらべて非常に少ないため、このジャンルの重要性をすでに理解していたわずかな小児科医や内科医がこれまでの長い間、この治療に携わってこられました。

　新美仁男先生が1992年にお書きになったものを読みますと、昭和30年代の全国の小児糖尿病患者数は100人あまりだったとのことです。昭和45年に三木、丸山両先生らを中心にして行われた14歳未満発症患者の全国調査によりますと、総数は619人と報告されています。

　このように、「小児に糖尿病が発症する」ことすら十分に認識されなかった時代に、日本で最初のサマーキャンプが昭和38年東京で丸山博先生によって開催されました。その後福岡、熊本、そして全国規模で開催されるようになり、今や夏は、小児、小学生、中学生、高校生の1型糖尿病患者を中心にサマーキャンプが開催されています。

　キャンプ開催には日本糖尿病協会をはじめ、インスリンメーカーや血糖自己測定機器メーカがこれまで多大な協賛をしてこられました。今日の小児ヤング糖尿病の治療の進歩をみますと、感慨深いものがあります。
