コカコーライゼイション・ニンテンドーイゼイション （2003.02） 　英語の勉強と外国のメディアからの情報を得ることを目的として、TIME誌を毎週購読している。

　先々月に発行された同誌の表紙に、以前、私が使用していた「使い捨てタイプのNOVO社のペンフィル^®R」を持った男性が掲載されており、表紙のタイトルは、「THE ASIAN DISEASE - Diabetes is becoming a regional epidemic. Are you or your kids at risk.（アジアの疾病−アジアで流行しつつある糖尿病。あなたとあなたの子供達が危険にさらされている。）」とあったので、いつも以上に興味深く読んだ。

　記事の内容としては、糖尿病の患者数およびその患者数が激増しており深刻な状況となりつつある点、1型と2型の違いや合併症を含めた糖尿病という病気の説明、疫学的にインド人、中国人、マレー人は糖尿病になりやすい傾向があることなどが書かれていた。

　世界的に糖尿病患者数が激増しつつある中で、アジア地域の激増振りは特に深刻に受け止めなければない。以前は、10歳前後で発病する糖尿病といえば、ほとんどが1型であったにもかかわらず、最近2型が増えているということである。増えているというよりも“流行”と表現されており、香港、シンガポールそして日本の例が挙げられていた。

　その原因として、ライフスタイルの欧米化、特に、ハンバーガーやフライドチキンを初めとするファーストフード、ピザなど高カロリーで栄養バランスを欠いた食事、テレビ・コンピューターゲームに熱中し、外で遊ばなくなったために運動不足となったことが挙げられている。

　グローバリゼーションをもじって、「Coca-Colaization（コカコーライゼイション）」「Nintenndoizaition（ニンテンドーイゼイション）」と書かれていた（どの雑誌か記憶がないが、“マクドナリゼーション”という言葉も見たことがある）。

　今や日本のゲームは、アジアだけではなく世界各国で人気があり、日本人である私は誇らしく思っていたものだが、“不健康な生活をもたらすもの”の原因として挙げられてしまったことで、複雑な気持ちにさせられた。

　しかしながら、同特集記事の中で、世界初のクローン羊“ドリー”の誕生に成功した英国の医師、アラン・コールマン氏が1型糖尿病の根本治療の研究に取り組んでいること、1型糖尿病と戦いながらパキスタンのクリケットのナショナルチームのキャプテンとしてワールドカップの決勝進出の原動力となった選手のこと、WHOやIDF、各国政府の取り組みなど、ポジティブな内容もあり、今後も日本人として国際社会の一員として「糖尿病に負けないために国際的な視野で情報を収集と協力を進めていかなければならない」と決意を新たにした。

　国際糖尿病支援基金の活動もその一助になればさいわいと考えている。

Coca-Colaization・Nintenndoizaition

　I read TIME magazine every week to study English and learn information from non Japanese media.

　Since a man with a disposable penfilR syringe produced by NOVO , which I used to use ,was on the cover issued about two month ago, titled "The Asian Disease-Diabetes is becoming a regional epidemic .Are you or your kids at risk?", I read the article with more interest than usual.

　The article said, Asia is in critical condition because of the number of both diagnosed and expected diabetics will skyrocket. Furthermore it explained the difference between type1 and type2 including complications caused by it,and the fact that epidemiologically Indian ,Chinese and Malay are most at risk from it.

　With the greatly increasing number of the diabetics in the world, we have to be aware of the fact that Asian region shows sudden increase. The article said that until some years ago the most cases of diagnosed diabetes among about 10- year- old boys or girls were type 1 diabetes, but cases of type 2 have been increasing recently. The article used the word "epidemic" rather than "increasing" and showed the cases of Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.

　As the reason for the epidemic, it mentioned the westernization of Asian life style, especially the food, which has a lack of nutritional balance with high calorie foods such as fast food, including hamburgers and fried chickens. Also it cited lack of exercise caused by computer games which have been depriving children of playing outside because they play them for many hours.

　I found the word of "Coca-Colaization" "Nintenndozation"(though I don't remember in what exact magazine I have found the word of "MacDonalization"on the other day),steming out from "globalization" in the article.

　I was very proud that Japanese computer games are very popular not only in Asia but the world now. However, since that was shown to be what brings about unhealthy life style, I couldn't help feeling conflicted.

　But on the other hand, I also found positive contents such that British Dr.Alan Colman who contributed to the birth of Dolly first cloned sheep and who is now researching a cure of type 1 diabetes. As well a Pakistani cricket player with type 1 diabetes led the national team to the World Cup Final as the team leader and that WHO, IDF and that the world governments tackle and try new things. These things made me feel positive.

　I made up my mind that we have to correct information and cooperate with a view of globalization in order not to be defeated by DIABETES and that IDAF must contribute to put to the effort.
